Memorial Day Weekend 2026 in the Triangle: Pools, Parades & Family Events
Memorial Day weekend (Friday, May 22 β Monday, May 25 this year) is the unofficial start of summer in the Triangle β pools open, splash pads turn on for real, and every park transforms into a cookout. It's also the first three-day weekend in months, which means you have approximately 72 hours to fill before the kids start asking what's next.
I always plan one "real" outing, one cookout-or-pool day, and one nothing day. Here's how I'm thinking about this year's weekend, plus the events worth circling on your calendar.

Most Triangle public pools open on Saturday, May 23, 2026 β Memorial Day weekend is opening weekend, and it's a tradition worth showing up for. Expect lines at the popular ones.
Raleigh public pools (operated by Parks & Rec):
Pullen Aquatic Center (410 Ashe Avenue) β indoor pool, year-round, but the outdoor splash area really comes alive Memorial Day weekend
Optimist Pool (5908 Whittier Drive) β a neighborhood favorite, less crowded than Pullen
Lake Johnson Pool (4601 Avent Ferry Road) β opens late May with a great kiddie area
Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center (5908 Buffaloe Road) β brand-new lazy river, this gets MOBBED on opening dayDurham public pools:
Forest Hills Pool (1639 University Drive) β historic outdoor pool, opens Memorial Day weekend
Long Meadow Park Pool β neighborhood-pool charm
Hillside Pool β a Durham summer stapleCary:
Cary Community Center pools open the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend with extended hours all weekend
Sk8-Cary typically does Memorial Day specials too (different vibe but same crowd of kids burning energy)Pro tip: Check your specific town's Parks & Rec page the week before β opening sometimes shifts a day if weather is bad. And buy your season pass online the day pools open. Lines at the front desk on Saturday morning are brutal.
Parades, Ceremonies & Free Civic Events
This is what Memorial Day is actually about, and it's worth taking even toddlers to one ceremony β bring a flag, talk briefly about why we're there, and let them eat a popsicle after.
Apex Memorial Day Parade β typically Saturday morning down Salem Street in downtown Apex. Veterans, fire trucks, kids on bikes. Family-perfect.
Wake Forest Memorial Day Ceremony β usually held Monday morning at the Veterans Memorial. Short, dignified, kid-appropriate.
NC State Capitol Memorial Day Service β downtown Raleigh, Monday morning. The most formal option, but also the most powerful for older kids who can sit still through speeches.
Holly Springs Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans Park β short and lovely.
Raleigh National Cemetery lays flags before the weekend; you can drive through and explain what your kids are seeing.Check each city's Parks & Rec or town website the week of for exact times and any year-to-year changes.
Lake Day: The Move If You Don't Have a Pool
If pool lines aren't your thing, head to a lake. Bring sunscreen, a cooler, and a tarp.
Jordan Lake (Ebenezer Church or Vista Point recreation areas) β designated swimming areas, lifeguards on duty Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. $7 per car. Gets crowded by 11 a.m., so go early.
Falls Lake (Sandling Beach or Beaverdam Recreation Area) β same deal, $7 per car, real swimming with lifeguards.
Lake Crabtree County Park β no swimming here, but rent a paddleboat or kayak ($5-10) and let the kids feel like they're at the lake without the drive.Free + Easy: When You Just Want to Be Outside
Pullen Park in Raleigh β train, carousel, paddleboats. Memorial Day weekend it's busy but festive. Bring your own picnic to skip the food line.
Bond Park in Cary β splash pad, lake, rentable boats, fishing for kids
Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham β peak peony and rose bloom in late May, free, magical
JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State β also peak bloom, also free, also magical
Eno River State Park β easy hikes, swimming holes, picnic spots

A Realistic Mom Plan for the 3-Day Weekend
If I had to write your weekend on a sticky note:
Saturday: Pool opening day or Apex parade in the morning, low-key cookout at home in the afternoon
Sunday: Lake or arboretum (whichever feels less ambitious), then takeout and a movie
Monday: A short Memorial Day ceremony in the morning, splash pad afterward, leftovers for dinner, kids in bed early because school is back TuesdayThat's a weekend you'll all remember β without ending Sunday night exhausted and resentful.
Things That Are Actually Closed on Memorial Day (Monday May 25)
So you can plan accordingly:
All public libraries (Wake County, Durham County, Orange County)
Post offices and most banks
City offices and trash pickup is delayed by a day all week (so Wednesday becomes Thursday, etc.)
Most pediatrician offices and dentists β call ahead if anyone has an appointmentGrocery stores, restaurants, museums, and pools are all open (often with extended holiday hours).
