One-Day Itinerary: Durham Food and Fun with Kids
Durham is the food capital of the Triangle, and if you plan it right, you can eat your way through Bull City while keeping kids entertained between bites. This itinerary balances incredible food stops with genuinely fun activities.
8:30 AM β Rise Biscuits and Donuts
Start at Rise on S Duke Street. Their biscuit sandwiches are massive and their donuts are works of art. The maple bacon donut is the stuff of legend. Kids love picking their own donut from the case. Quick service, usually no major wait this early.
Parking: Free lot on site.
9:15 AM β Durham Farmers' Market (Saturdays Only)
If it is Saturday, walk to the Durham Farmers' Market at the Durham Central Park pavilion. Open 8 AM-12 PM, April through November. The kids love the fresh fruit samples, the live music, and watching the goings-on. Great for picking up snacks for later. If it is not Saturday, skip ahead to the next stop.
9:30 AM β Museum of Life and Science
Drive 5 minutes to the Museum of Life and Science on W Murray Avenue. This is your main morning activity. Hit the highlights: Dinosaur Trail (outdoor life-size dinos), Farmyard (goats, pigs, chickens β the goats are very friendly), Butterfly House (magical), and the Train Ride through the woods. In warm months, the Hideaway Woods outdoor adventure area has aerial walkways and treehouses.
Time needed: 2.5-3 hours minimum Cost: ~$20/person, free under 1 Strollers: Yes, mostly paved. Trails are packed gravel.
12:30 PM β Lunch at Dame's Chicken & Waffles
Head back downtown to Dame's on W Chapel Hill Street. This is a Durham institution. The Original is all you need β crispy fried chicken on a Belgian waffle. Kids can get a half waffle or chicken tenders. The atmosphere is loud and casual, exactly what you want with kids. Expect a 15-20 minute wait on weekends.
Backup: Bull City Burger and Brewery on Corporation Street has great burgers and an attached brewery with outdoor seating. They also have a kids menu.
1:30 PM β American Tobacco Campus + Durham Bulls Athletic Park
Walk off lunch at the American Tobacco Campus. The stream, the wide walkways, and the renovated industrial buildings make it one of the coolest spots in the Triangle. Walk through to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park β even without a game, kids love the giant bull statue and the open plaza. Check the schedule; afternoon Bulls games are fantastic family outings ($12-15/ticket).
Drive time from Dame's: 5-minute walk.
2:30 PM β Bennett Place or West Point on the Eno
Two very different options depending on your crew:
Option A: Bennett Place Historic Site β Free, 10-minute drive. The site of the largest Civil War surrender. Small museum, nice grounds, and a surprisingly engaging 15-minute video. Good for ages 7 and up.
Option B: West Point on the Eno β Free, 10-minute drive. A beautiful park with easy trails along the Eno River, a restored mill, and shallow wading spots perfect for summer days. Much more nature-focused and great for all ages.
4:00 PM β Durham Food Hall
Return downtown to the Durham Food Hall on Foster Street. This is a food hall paradise with multiple vendors under one roof, so picky eaters can all find something. Napoli has great pizza slices, Mothers & Sons does excellent Italian, and Press has coffee drinks for the adults. There is outdoor seating with a nice patio area.
5:00 PM β Sweet Finish at The Parlour
End the day at The Parlour on W Main Street. Their ice cream is made in-house with creative flavors that rotate seasonally. The salted butter caramel is always a safe bet. The line can be long on warm evenings but it is worth the wait.
5:30 PM β Head Home
You have eaten incredibly well, the kids had genuine fun, and you experienced the best of Durham in one day.
