The Perfect Saturday in Chapel Hill with Kids
Chapel Hill is our go-to when we want a Saturday that feels like a little adventure. The UNC campus is stunning, Franklin Street has great food, and there are hidden parks and trails most visitors never find. Here is how we spend a perfect day.
9:00 AM β Breakfast at Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen
There is no better way to start than Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen on E Franklin Street. Pull through the drive-through (there is no indoor seating) and grab chicken biscuits for the whole car. Cash only and they close when they sell out, so do not sleep on this. Park at the Morehead Planetarium lot β it is free on weekends and centrally located.
Parking tip: The Rosemary Street deck and the Wallace deck on Franklin Street are affordable. Metered spots on side streets are free on weekends.
9:30 AM β Walk the UNC Campus
Stroll through the UNC campus starting at the Old Well β iconic and a great photo spot. Walk through Polk Place toward the Coker Arboretum, a hidden gem of winding paths through gardens. The whole campus is gorgeous and surprisingly kid-friendly with wide sidewalks and plenty of squirrels to chase.
Stroller access: Mostly good on main paths but some brick sidewalks are bumpy.
10:30 AM β Morehead Planetarium and Science Center
Head to the Morehead Planetarium on E Franklin Street. The planetarium shows are amazing for kids 5 and up, and the science exhibits downstairs keep toddlers busy. Shows run every hour on weekends. Buy tickets online.
Cost: $10-12/person. Kids under 3 free.
12:00 PM β Lunch on Franklin Street
You have options. Sup Dogs is our go-to with kids β hot dogs and burgers in a casual, loud space. For something nicer, Buns has great burgers and an outdoor patio. If your kids are adventurous eaters, Vimala's Curryblossom Cafe has incredible Indian food made with local ingredients.
1:00 PM β Kidzu Children's Museum
Walk to Kidzu Children's Museum at University Place. This is a smaller museum geared toward kids 0-8, with art stations, a climbing area, building zones, and outdoor nature play. Expect to spend about 90 minutes. The staff is incredibly friendly and there is a nice nursing room.
Cost: $10/person. Under 1 free.
2:30 PM β Battle Park
Drive or walk (10 minutes on foot) to Battle Park for a nature break. The Forest Theatre β an outdoor stone amphitheater in the woods β is magical and kids love scrambling around the stone seats. The trails are easy to moderate and well marked. Bring bug spray in warm months.
3:30 PM β Explore Carrboro
Drive 5 minutes (or walk 15 minutes along the greenway) to downtown Carrboro. Check out the ArtsCenter for family workshops, browse the funky shops on Weaver Street, and let kids run around on the Weaver Street Market lawn while you grab a drink and a snack. The lawn area has a chill, community vibe β you will see families everywhere.
4:30 PM β Treats at Maple View Farm
Drive 10 minutes to Maple View Farm Ice Cream on Dairyland Road for scoops of their fresh ice cream. The setting is gorgeous β actual farmland views β and kids love seeing the cows. There are picnic tables and plenty of room to run. The strawberry and butter pecan flavors are legendary.
5:30 PM β Head Home
You covered campus, culture, food, nature, and small-town charm all in one day. That is Chapel Hill at its best.
Budget Breakdown
Bad Weather Plan
Add more time at Kidzu and the Morehead Planetarium. Flyleaf Books on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd has an excellent children's section for rainy afternoon browsing.Getting Around Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill is compact enough that you can walk most of this itinerary once you park. The stretch from the UNC campus to Franklin Street to the planetarium is all walkable. Driving is only needed for Kidzu (at University Place), Battle Park (technically walkable but a hike with kids), Carrboro (doable on foot via the bikeway but easier to drive), and Maple View Farm. Budget about 30 minutes of total drive time for the whole day. The CH Transit buses are free if you want to try public transit with kids β routes serve most of these stops.Restroom Availability
