The Perfect Saturday in Downtown Durham with Kids
Durham has transformed into one of the best family destinations in the Triangle, and downtown is packed with things to do. Here is the itinerary I use every time we have a free Saturday and I want to show Durham some love.
8:30 AM β Breakfast at Monuts
Start at Monuts on W Chapel Hill Street. Get there by 8:30 to beat the line β by 9:30 on Saturdays it is out the door. Their donuts are legendary but they also have breakfast sandwiches and biscuits that fuel kids for a full morning of exploring. The pimento cheese biscuit is my personal weakness.
Parking tip: The city deck on Church Street is free on weekends. You can also find free street parking on most downtown streets on Saturdays.
9:15 AM β Explore American Tobacco Campus
Walk five minutes to the American Tobacco Campus. This is an incredible outdoor space β wide open walkways along the stream, big grassy areas, and the old Lucky Strike water tower is a cool photo op. Kids love running along the stream channel and crossing the bridges. The campus is completely flat and stroller-friendly.
10:00 AM β Museum of Life and Science
Drive 5 minutes north on Murray Avenue to the Museum of Life and Science. This is a full morning destination. The outdoor dinosaur trail, butterfly house, and farmyard are must-sees. The new Rocket Park area has great climbing structures. If your kids love trains, the train ride through the woods is a highlight.
Cost: Around $20/person, kids under 1 free. Buy online in advance. Stroller access: Excellent throughout, though some outdoor trails are gravel. Parking: Free lot on site. Arrives early as it fills by 11 on nice Saturdays.
12:30 PM β Lunch at Dame's Chicken & Waffles
Head back downtown to Dame's Chicken & Waffles on W Chapel Hill Street. Kids go crazy for the waffles and you can get yours loaded with toppings. The space is casual and noisy enough that nobody notices kid chaos. If the wait is too long, Nana's right around the corner has excellent soul food and quick service.
1:30 PM β Durham Central Park & Farmers Market
Walk to Durham Central Park. If it is a Saturday morning, the Durham Farmers Market is in full swing in the pavilion (open until 12, so you might catch the tail end). The park has a great playground, open green spaces, and covered pavilion areas. The Durham Food Hall is right here too if anyone wants a snack or second coffee for the adults.
2:30 PM β Wheels Fun Park or Northgate Park
If your crew has energy to spare, drive 5 minutes to Wheels Fun Park for mini golf, bumper boats, and go-karts. For a free option, Northgate Park on Lavender Avenue has an excellent large playground, walking trails, and a creek the kids can wade in during warm months.
4:00 PM β Ice Cream at The Parlour
Stop at The Parlour on W Main Street for what might be the best ice cream in the Triangle. Their flavors rotate and are always creative. The line can be long but it moves fast. Kids love watching the scoops through the window.
5:00 PM β Wrap Up at Durham Bulls Athletic Park
Even if there is no game, walk around the outside of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The bull statue is a must-see for kids, and the plaza around the stadium is great for riding scooters or just goofing around. Check the Bulls schedule β afternoon games are a fantastic family option if the timing works.
Budget Breakdown
Rainy Day Backup
Skip the parks and spend extra time at the Museum of Life and Science (indoor exhibits are fantastic). Add in the Durham Food Hall for lunch instead and browse Letters Bookshop next door β great kids section. Why This Order Works
Monuts first thing avoids the line. The American Tobacco Campus gives kids a chance to move their bodies before a long museum visit. Museum of Life and Science is the main event and happens when kids have the most energy and patience. Lunch at Dame's is a reward. And the afternoon winds down gradually β ice cream, then a mellow walk, then home. The worst thing you can do is put the big-ticket attraction at the end of the day when everyone is already spent.Restroom and Stroller Notes
