Sports Fan Family Weekend in the Triangle

Three major universities, a minor league baseball team, professional soccer, and a region that lives and breathes ACC basketball. The Triangle is a sports family's dream. this weekend puts you in the stands and on the field.

Saturday: Game Day

9:00 AM — Morning Workout at Fred G. Bond Park (Cary)

Start the day with movement. Bond Park has:

  • Basketball courts
  • Tennis courts
  • A massive disc golf course
  • Running trails
  • Open fields for catch, soccer, or frisbee
  • Bring whatever sports equipment you have and let the family play for an hour. The fresh air and exercise set the tone for a sports-filled day.

10:30 AM — NC State Campus + Carter-Finley Stadium (Raleigh)

Drive to the NC State campus. Walk around the athletics district:

  • See Carter-Finley Stadium (football) — massive and impressive even from outside
  • Visit the Wolfpack Hall of Fame area
  • Walk through PNC Arena plaza (home to NC State basketball and the NHL Carolina Hurricanes)
  • The Talley Student Union has good food options
  • If there is a home football or basketball game, buy tickets. NC State games have an electric family atmosphere. Check schedules at gopack.com.

12:00 PM — Lunch at Gonza Tacos y Tequila (Raleigh)

Drive to Gonza on Peace Street for tacos near the Glenwood South area. Quick, casual, and great food. Or grab something at the NC State Talley Student Union food court.

1:00 PM — Durham Bulls Game or NC Courage Game

    Check schedules and pick one:

Durham Bulls (baseball, April-September): The Durham Bulls Athletic Park is one of the best minor league stadiums in America. Tickets are $12-15, hot dogs are cheap, and the between-inning entertainment keeps kids engaged even if they lose interest in the game. The famous snorting bull in left field is iconic.

NC Courage (women's soccer, spring-fall) or NC FC (men's soccer): Games at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary are exciting, affordable, and extremely family-friendly. Soccer games are faster-paced than baseball and often more engaging for younger kids.

No game today? Visit the Canes Practice Facility (PNC Arena area) — sometimes open for public viewing during practice sessions (check schedule).

Tip: Minor league and local soccer games are significantly more affordable and family-friendly than major league events. A family of four can attend a Bulls game for under $60 including food.

    4:30 PM — Post-Game Activity

    If the game ended early:

  • Wheels Fun Park (Durham) — batting cages are the perfect sports-weekend activity
  • Drive-through at Cook Out for milkshakes and a snack
  • 6:00 PM — Dinner at Bull City Burger and Brewery (Durham)

Great burgers in a casual space. If you went to the Bulls game, this is right downtown. The kids menu is solid and the adults can try a local craft beer.

    Sunday: Play + College Tour

9:00 AM — Breakfast at Rise (Durham)

Biscuits and donuts to fuel the day. Quick service, great food.

10:00 AM — Duke Campus (Durham)

Walk the Duke campus with a sports lens:

  • Cameron Indoor Stadium — the most famous college basketball arena. Even from outside, it is iconic. Check for tour availability.
  • Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium — Duke football
  • Walk through the Duke Gardens nearby for a beautiful non-sports interlude
  • If Duke basketball is in season and you can get tickets (not easy), it is an unforgettable experience.

11:30 AM — UNC Campus (Chapel Hill)

Drive 15 minutes to Chapel Hill:

  • Dean E. Smith Center — home of UNC basketball. The statue of Dean Smith outside is worth seeing.
  • Kenan Memorial Stadium — beautiful college football setting
  • Walk Franklin Street for the full college town sports vibe — jersey shops, Tar Heel gear everywhere
  • 12:30 PM — Lunch at Sup Dogs (Chapel Hill)

Hot dogs, burgers, and a sports-bar atmosphere right on Franklin Street. TVs everywhere showing whatever game is on. Loud, casual, and fun with kids.

1:30 PM — Active Sports Afternoon

    Get the family playing:

  • Topgolf (Durham) — driving range meets arcade. Fun for all skill levels, ages 5+.
  • Triangle Sportsplex (Hillsborough) — ice skating, leagues, and open skate times
  • Frankie's Fun Park (Raleigh) — mini golf, go-karts, batting cages
  • Lake Johnson (Raleigh) — rent kayaks or paddleboards for a water sport session
  • 4:00 PM — Sports Gear Shopping

If the kids caught the sports bug:

  • Dick's Sporting Goods (multiple locations)
  • Play It Again Sports (Raleigh or Cary) — used and new equipment at great prices
  • Durham Sports Shop — local running and sports store
  • Triangle Sports Calendar Quick Reference

  • Football: NC State, Duke, UNC — fall (September-November)
  • Basketball: NC State, Duke, UNC — winter (November-March). ACC Tournament in March is electric.
  • Baseball: Durham Bulls — spring/summer (April-September)
  • Soccer: NC Courage + NC FC — spring through fall
  • Hockey: Carolina Hurricanes (NHL) at PNC Arena — October through spring
  • Golf: Various tournaments including SAS Championship (PGA Tour Champions) in Cary
  • Budget Tips

  • Minor league baseball is the best value in Triangle sports
  • College games (non-basketball) are usually affordable
  • Soccer games at WakeMed are very reasonable
  • Watch for promotional nights — many teams have family value packs
  • Standing room or lawn seating saves significant money
