Teen-Approved Weekend in the Triangle
Getting teens out of the house and off screens requires activities that pass the "that is so lame" filter. I consulted my teenager and her friends to build this itinerary. Their verdict: "It is actually decent." From a teen, that is a five-star review.
Saturday
10:00 AM β Late Start, Obviously
Teens do not do 8 AM. Accept this. Let them sleep until 9:30 and be in the car by 10.
10:30 AM β Brunch at Beasley's Chicken + Honey (Raleigh)
Beasley's on W Martin Street serves fried chicken and waffles that even the pickiest teen will devour. The space is cool without trying too hard, which matters at this age. The honey drizzle on the chicken biscuit is incredible.
Alternative: Monuts in Durham if you are starting on that side of the Triangle. Their donuts have teen-approved Instagram appeal.
11:30 AM β Escape Room
Escape rooms are the single best activity for teens because they involve teamwork, problem-solving, and phones are not allowed.
Top picks:
Cost: $25-35/person. Book in advance, especially weekends. Duration: 60 minutes plus briefing.
1:00 PM β Lunch at Transfer Co. Food Hall (Raleigh) or Durham Food Hall
Food halls are teen paradise because nobody has to agree on a restaurant. Let them explore and pick their own thing. Both food halls have great variety, outdoor seating, and a vibe teens appreciate.
Budget per teen: $12-18.
2:30 PM β Triangle Rock Club
Indoor rock climbing is legitimately cool for teens. The bouldering walls are like physical puzzles, and the auto-belay routes let them climb high without a partner. The Morrisville location is the largest with the most variety.
Cost: ~$20/person including shoe rental. Time needed: 90 minutes.
4:30 PM β Thrift Shopping or Record Stores
Let teens explore their own style:
Give them a small budget ($15-20) and let them browse independently. This is freedom they crave.
6:30 PM β Dinner at Dashi (Raleigh) or M Kokko (Durham)
Ramen is universally teen-approved. Dashi on W Martin Street in Raleigh does excellent ramen with a cool vibe. M Kokko in Durham is another great option. The slurping is encouraged.
Alternative: MOD Pizza β build your own pizza, fast, and customizable for picky eaters.
Sunday
11:00 AM β Late Brunch at Elmo's Diner (Durham or Carrboro)
Elmo's is loud, colorful, and has milkshakes at 11 AM. Teens respond well to milkshakes at 11 AM.
12:00 PM β Wheels Fun Park (Durham) or Frankie's Fun Park (Raleigh)
Go-karts, laser tag, arcade games, mini golf, and bumper boats. Yes, teens say they are too old for this and then have the time of their lives. The go-karts are the hook β nobody can resist racing.
Budget: $25-40/person depending on activities. Combo deals are usually available.
2:30 PM β UNC or Duke Campus Walk
Plant college seeds. Walk the UNC campus and grab lunch on Franklin Street, or tour Duke's West Campus and see the chapel. Teens often get quietly interested when they are walking a campus without the pressure of an official tour.
Fun angle: Challenge them to find the best Instagram spot on campus.
4:00 PM β Cocoa Cinnamon (Durham)
The most aesthetically pleasing coffee shop in the Triangle. Cocoa Cinnamon on Geer Street has incredible hot chocolate and coffee drinks that teens go crazy for. The interior design is cool, the vibe is right, and they can finally take those photos.
5:00 PM β Free Time
Give them space. Drop them off at a bookstore, let them walk around a shopping center, or let them go home and decompress. Teens need unstructured time as much as activities.
How to Survive a Weekend with Teens
Budget Breakdown for Teens
Teens cost more than little kids. Escape rooms and climbing gyms are not cheap, and teens eat like small bears. Here is a realistic budget for one teen for the weekend:Multiply by the number of teens. Yes, it adds up. But compare that to the cost of a bored teen scrolling TikTok for 48 hours while complaining there is nothing to do. The investment in an engaged weekend pays off in family connection and maybe, just maybe, a teen who voluntarily says "can we do that again sometime."
