Three-Day Weekend Itinerary for the Triangle
A three-day weekend in the Triangle is the sweet spot β enough time to experience all three cities without cramming everything into 48 hours. Whether it is a holiday weekend, a long visit, or just a Friday you decided to play hooky, here is how to fill three days with the best the Triangle has to offer.
Day 1 (Friday or Saturday): Raleigh
9:00 AM β Breakfast at Boulted Bread
Start at Boulted Bread in the Warehouse District. Incredible pastries, excellent coffee, and a beautiful industrial space. The seasonal croissants and tartines are always excellent.
10:00 AM β NC Museum of Natural Sciences + NC Museum of History
Spend the morning at the two free state museums on Jones Street. Start with Natural Sciences (the dinosaurs, live animals, and Nature Research Center labs), then walk next door to the Museum of History (Story of North Carolina, Sports Hall of Fame). Budget 2.5-3 hours total.
1:00 PM β Lunch at Transfer Co. Food Hall
Drive east to Transfer Co. for multiple food options under one roof. The courtyard is great on nice days.
2:30 PM β NC Museum of Art + Museum Park
Drive west to the art museum for free indoor galleries and the incredible outdoor Museum Park with its large-scale art installations in the forest. The Cloud Chamber and Gyre are must-sees. Budget 2 hours.
5:00 PM β Dix Park
End the afternoon at Dix Park for the best skyline view in Raleigh. Playground, open fields, and that stunning panorama.
6:30 PM β Dinner at Bida Manda
Laotian food that will make you a regular. Reservations recommended. The sticky rice and noodle dishes are outstanding.
Day 2 (Saturday): Durham
8:30 AM β Breakfast at Monuts
Get there early for the best donuts and biscuits in the Triangle. The seasonal donuts are always creative.
9:15 AM β Durham Farmers Market (Saturdays, seasonal)
Walk to the market at Durham Central Park. Sample, browse, and soak in the community vibe.
10:00 AM β Museum of Life and Science
The major morning destination. Hit the Dinosaur Trail, Farmyard, Butterfly House, and Hideaway Woods. Plan 2.5-3 hours.
1:00 PM β Lunch at Durham Food Hall
Everyone picks their own food. Napoli for pizza, Mothers & Sons for Italian, Press for coffee. Great patio seating.
2:30 PM β American Tobacco Campus + Durham Bulls Athletic Park
Walk the campus, play along the stream, and see the famous bull statue. If a Bulls afternoon game is on, buy tickets β it is one of the best family experiences in the Triangle.
4:00 PM β Eno River State Park
Drive 10 minutes for a nature break at Fews Ford. The 2-mile river loop is beautiful and includes wading spots in warm months.
6:00 PM β Dinner at Dame's Chicken & Waffles
Fried chicken on waffles in a loud, fun, casual space. Durham institution status.
7:30 PM β Ice Cream at The Parlour
End the Durham day with the best ice cream in the Triangle. The line is part of the experience.
Day 3 (Sunday): Chapel Hill + Carrboro
9:00 AM β Breakfast at Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen
Cash only, drive-through only, closes when they sell out. The fried chicken biscuit is legendary. Do not oversleep.
9:30 AM β UNC Campus Walk
Walk from the Old Well through McCorkle Place and the Coker Arboretum. The campus is gorgeous any time of year. Free, peaceful, and historically fascinating.
10:30 AM β Morehead Planetarium
Catch a planetarium show and explore the science exhibits. Great for all ages.
12:00 PM β Lunch at Al's Burger Shack
Among the best burgers in the South. Line is worth it. Eat outside.
1:00 PM β Kidzu Children's Museum or Battle Park
Under 8: Kidzu for hands-on play. Over 8: Battle Park for the Forest Theatre and nature trails.
2:30 PM β Carrboro
Walk or drive to Carrboro. Browse the Weaver Street Market lawn, explore Nice Price Books, and soak up the quirky small-town vibe.
3:30 PM β Maple View Farm
Ice cream with a view of the farm. The perfect end to three days in the Triangle.
5:00 PM β Farewell Dinner at Vimala's Curryblossom Cafe (Chapel Hill)
If you have the energy for one more meal out, Vimala's is an incredible send-off. Indian food made with local ingredients, and the warmest hospitality in the Triangle.
