Ultimate Family Staycation: 5-Day Triangle Adventure
Five days to explore the Triangle like a tourist in your own backyard. Whether it is spring break, summer vacation, or a week where you decided to stay home instead of driving 12 hours to the beach, this itinerary proves that the Triangle has more than enough to fill a full vacation. I planned this for my own family and we had the best "staycation" ever.
Day 1 (Monday): Raleigh Deep Dive
Theme: Museums, parks, and downtown.

Both buildings. Hit the dinosaurs, the live animals, the Nature Research Center labs, and the top-floor observation deck. Free.12:00 PM β NC Museum of History (1 hour)
Walk next door. Story of NC, Sports Hall of Fame. Free.1:00 PM β Lunch at Bida Manda
Laotian food that converts even picky eaters.2:30 PM β NC Museum of Art + Museum Park (2 hours)
Indoor galleries then outdoor sculpture trails. All free.5:00 PM β Dix Park
Skyline views, Gipson Play Plaza, open fields. Free.6:30 PM β Dinner at Poole's Diner

Day 2 (Tuesday): Durham Exploration
Theme: Science, food, and the Bull City vibe.

Day 3 (Wednesday): Chapel Hill + Carrboro
Theme: College town charm, nature, and community.
9:00 AM β Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen (drive-through, cash only)
9:30 AM β UNC Campus Walk β Old Well, McCorkle Place, Coker Arboretum
10:30 AM β Morehead Planetarium (90 minutes)
12:00 PM β Lunch at Al's Burger Shack
1:00 PM β Kidzu Children's Museum (90 minutes, ages 0-8) or Battle Park (all ages)
3:00 PM β Carrboro β Weaver Street Market lawn, Nice Price Books, ArtsCenter
4:30 PM β Maple View Farm for ice cream
6:00 PM β Dinner at Vimala's Curryblossom Cafe
Day 3 cost: Approximately $120-170
Day 4 (Thursday): Adventure Day
Theme: Get out of town. Nature, farms, and small-town exploration.
8:00 AM β Pack the car with water, snacks, sunscreen, towels, and a change of clothes.
8:30 AM β Drive to Jordan Lake State Recreation Area (30 minutes from Cary)
Spend the morning at Seaforth Beach (swimming, seasonal) or rent a kayak. Look for bald eagles β Jordan Lake has one of the largest populations in the eastern US.12:00 PM β Drive to Saxapahaw (30 minutes)
Lunch at the Saxapahaw General Store or Haw River Ballroom. This tiny riverfront village is charming and feels like a different world. Kids can play by the river.2:00 PM β Drive to Hillsborough (20 minutes)
Walk the historic downtown β the oldest colonial town in the region. Browse shops, see the old courthouse, and get ice cream. If your crew has energy, hike Occoneechee Mountain (2-mile loop to the overlook).4:00 PM β Return home and rest.
6:00 PM β Cook Out drive-through for dinner.
