What's Open (and Closed) on Memorial Day in the Triangle (2026)
Memorial Day 2026 falls on Monday, May 25. Every year I get the same texts from friends the Sunday night before: "Is the library open tomorrow? Is trash still getting picked up? Are the pools actually open yet?" So here is the cheat sheet I keep on my phone, Triangle-specific, for Memorial Day Monday and the long weekend around it.
The short version: it's a federal holiday, so anything government-run is mostly closed, but the fun stuff โ pools, museums, restaurants, big-box stores โ is mostly open (and pools officially open for the season this exact weekend). Details below.

Closed on Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a federal holiday, so the predictable list of closures:
All public libraries โ Wake County, Durham County, Chapel Hill, Orange County, and town library systems are closed Monday. (Heads up: many also close early or fully the Sunday before, so don't count on a Sunday-afternoon library run either.)
Banks and credit unions โ closed. ATMs and apps work as normal.
Post offices โ closed; no regular mail delivery (Amazon and some private carriers still run).
Government offices โ city, county, state, and federal offices closed. DMV closed.
Public schools and most preschools/daycares โ closed (some private daycares stay open; confirm with yours).
Trash and recycling โ see the section below; this is the one that trips everyone up.Open on Memorial Day (the good news)
This is a "go do something fun outside" holiday, and the Triangle cooperates:
Outdoor public pools โ Memorial Day weekend is the official season opening for most municipal pools in Raleigh, Cary, and surrounding towns. Many run special holiday hours of roughly 10 a.m.โ4 p.m. on the Monday. See our dedicated [Triangle pool & splash pad opening dates guide](/guides/triangle-pools-splash-pads-opening-dates-2026) for the full rundown.
Splash pads / spraygrounds โ most open for the season Memorial Day weekend. Free, no reservation, perfect for toddlers. ([Splash pad guide here.](/guides/free-water-play-splash-pads-triangle))
City and county parks, greenways, and playgrounds โ grounds are open dawn to dusk; only the offices and rec-center desks are closed.
State parks โ William B. Umstead, Eno River, Falls Lake, Jordan Lake recreation areas are all open. They get busy on Memorial Day โ arrive before 10 a.m. for parking.
Museums โ Marbles Kids Museum, NC Museum of Natural Sciences, NC Museum of Art, and the Museum of Life and Science (Durham) are generally open on Memorial Day. Hours can shift for the holiday, so check the website or call that morning.
Grocery stores โ Harris Teeter, Wegmans, Publix, Lidl, Food Lion are open, frequently on reduced or "holiday" hours. Pharmacies inside them may close earlier.
Big-box and malls โ Target, Costco (often closed, actually โ Costco closes major holidays), most malls and shopping centers are open. Costco is the notable exception; don't plan a Costco run.
Restaurants and breweries โ most are open and many run Memorial Day specials and patios. Family-friendly breweries are a great low-key call. The Trash & Recycling Schedule (the question everyone forgets)
This is the one I get asked about most. Because Memorial Day is a Monday holiday, most Triangle municipalities delay collection by one day for the rest of that week:
Raleigh: Monday routes typically shift; collection runs one day late through the week (Friday routes collected Saturday). Confirm on the City of Raleigh solid waste page.
Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, Apex, Holly Springs, Garner, Morrisville: Same general pattern โ pickup slides one day later for the holiday week.
Private haulers (e.g., GFL, Waste Industries): Many also observe the holiday; check your provider.Mom move: Put a reminder in your phone for Monday night that trash is Tuesday this week, not Monday. I have forgotten this exactly once and lived with the consequences for seven days.
A Realistic Memorial Day Plan
If I had to write your Memorial Day Monday on a sticky note:
Morning: Pool opens โ get there at 10 a.m. before it's wall-to-wall. Or hit a state park early for a short hike before the heat.
Lunch: Pack a picnic (libraries and a lot of quick spots are closed; planning ahead beats a closed-door surprise). See our [best picnic spots guide](/guides/best-picnic-spots-families-triangle).
Afternoon: Splash pad or a family-friendly brewery patio. Catch a Memorial ceremony if you want to mark the day with the kids โ Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh typically holds an afternoon service.
Evening: Trash out for Tuesday. (You're welcome.)Memorial Day in the Triangle is genuinely one of the easiest holidays to do well โ the weather usually shows up, the pools open, and almost everything fun is open. Just don't plan on the library or the bank, and remember the trash.
