Winter Activities for Kids in the Triangle
Winter in the Triangle is mild compared to up north, but it can still feel long when the kids are cooped up. The good news? There's actually a ton to do from December through February if you know where to look. Here's what works for us year after year.
Ice Skating
Seasonal outdoor rinks pop up each November or December and typically run through January or February.
Fenton in Cary sets up an outdoor rink in their plaza area β it's a fun outing combined with shopping and dining
Downtown Raleigh typically has a seasonal rink at Red Hat Amphitheater or a nearby location
Triangle Ice Rinks β permanent indoor rinks like Icehouse in Hillsborough and Polar Ice in Raleigh/Wake Forest offer public skate sessions year-round
Many rinks offer "learn to skate" classes for beginners β great for kids trying it for the first timePro tip: Bring your own thick socks. Rental skates plus thin socks equals misery.
Indoor Play Spaces
When it's 38 degrees and raining (which is most of January), these save us:
Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh β always a hit for younger kids
Kidzu Children's Museum in Chapel Hill
Museum of Life and Science in Durham β indoor exhibits plus the butterfly house is warm and tropical
Defy Trampoline Park in Raleigh and Durham
Sky Zone for bouncing off energy
Rush Hour Karting in Garner for older kids and teens
Local libraries run fantastic winter programming β story times, LEGO clubs, and movie screeningsOutdoor Winter Fun
Even in winter, we get some beautiful days in the 50s and 60s.
Eno River State Park is less crowded in winter, and the bare trees make for great views of the river
Umstead State Park trails are peaceful in winter months
Dorothea Dix Park is wonderful for a winter picnic on a sunny day
Duke Lemur Center tours run year-round (book well in advance β these sell out)
Carolina Tiger Rescue in Pittsboro does winter tours when the big cats are most activeWinter Day Trips
Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain are about 3-4 hours west and offer skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. Great for a weekend trip with kids.
Grandfather Mountain is stunning in winter, with potential for natural snow
Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville (about 2 hours) is a drive-through safari that's fun even in cooler weather
Tour a chocolate factory or bakery β Videri Chocolate in Raleigh offers a cool (and warm!) experienceStaying Cozy
Sometimes the best winter activities are right at home or nearby:
Hot chocolate crawl β visit several coffee shops and rank their hot cocoa (our family tradition)
Board game afternoon at Game Theory in Raleigh or a local game cafe
Movie marathon days at Alamo Drafthouse in Raleigh (kids' screenings are affordable)
Cooking or baking together β the Whole Foods in Durham sometimes offers kids' cooking classes
Indoor rock climbing at Triangle Rock Club (locations in Raleigh, Durham, and Morrisville)Making Winter Work
The hardest part of winter with kids isn't the cold β it's the short days and the energy that has nowhere to go. My advice: plan one outing per day, even if it's small. A 30-minute trip to the library or a walk around the block keeps everyone saner than a full day inside.
And don't sleep on those random 65-degree days we get in January and February. Drop everything, go to the park, and soak it up. That's peak Triangle winter right there.
Winter Craft and Creative Ideas
When outdoor options are limited, lean into creative projects:
Pottery painting at a local paint-your-own pottery studio β great for all ages
Build gingerbread houses (or gingerbread anything β we've done trains, castles, and disasters)
Winter bird watching β hang a feeder outside the kitchen window and keep a bird journal. Carolina wrens, cardinals, and woodpeckers are common Triangle winter visitors.
Cooking projects β soups, bread-making, and cookie decorating are perfect winter afternoon activities
LEGO challenge days β give each kid a theme and a time limit, then show off creationsWinter Community Events
Even in the quieter winter months, the Triangle has regular events:
First Friday Art Walks in downtown Raleigh and Durham continue year-round
Durham Farmers Market Winter Market runs on Saturdays inside the Durham Co-op space
State Farmers Market in Raleigh stays open year-round
Triangle Restaurant Week events pop up in January and February β a great excuse for a family dinner out
Local theaters run family-friendly productions throughout winter β check DPAC, Carolina Theatre, and community theater schedulesMore Guides You'll Love
